Arc protection device UDZ 00 "Rainbow-PSM" UHL3.1

2017: modernisation of an arc protection device UDZ 00 «Rainbow-PS"
2018: the device has been manufactured under the name "Arc protection device UDZ 00 Rainbow-PSM UHL3.1". The functionality of the device increased, the cost has been reduced.

The arc protection device UDZ 00 "Rainbow-PSM" UHL3.1 with polymeric fiber-optic sensors is designed to selectively protect the cabinets of low voltage complete device, switchgear 0.4-35 kV in case of short circuits, accompanied by an open electric arc. The device meets the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility tests according to GOST R 50746–2000.

UDZ 00 "Rainbow-PSM" UHL3.1 contains of:

  • control and indication unit (BKI), 1 pc.;
  • arc protection unit (BDZ), up to 99 pcs.;
  • polymer fiber-optic sensors, up to 4 pcs. per 1 arc protection unit;
  • connecting cable type SFTP 4 * 2 * 0.53.

Device description

The basis of the UDZ 00 "Rainbow-PSM" device is the arc protection unit (Fig. 1). On the front panel of the device there are LEDs that display the status of the device (EMERGENCY, NORMAL / FAULT), the status of discrete and optical inputs, output keys. The “RESET” button is used to return the arc protection unit to its original state in case of a malfunction or when fixing an accident. In the lower part of the case there are 4 optical connectors to which up to 4 fiber-optic sensors can be connected. On the upper plane of the device are power connectors, digital inputs, output keys, as well as a CAN bus connector. Arc protection unit is mounted on a DIN rail in the low-voltage compartment of the cabinet. The unit can be used to protect from one to three switchgear cabinets, depending on the required amount of fiber-optic sensors in each cabinet.

To display the information about the status of the system, to view the accident archive, and to program the arc protection unit, the control unit is used (Fig. 2). Four-line LCD display and controllers are located on the front side of the unit. Power, output key, and CAN bus connectors are located on the back side of the unit. Control and indication unit is mounted in a cutout on the front panel of the switchgear box. The control and indication unit is connected to the arc protection device blocks by the CAN bus. Blocks are installed in relay compartments of cells or in a separate shield.

The device has a decentralised, distributed protection structure, which significantly increases the survivability of the device. Protection against false alarms when illuminating fiber-optic sensors with an incandescent lamp, fluorescent lamp or sunlight.

 

Device operation

Arc protection unit has its own power supply, its own controller and can be used as a fully selfsufficient device. It has four optical fiber-optic sensors inputs, four output keys. In case of an electric arc detection and confirmation from the excess current cut-out / under-voltage protection sensors, the arc protection unit generates signals to disconnect protected cell and signal to bring unit to the next level. Top-level arc protection unit is waiting for of the excess current cut out / under-voltage protection sensors signal removal. In case of the excess current cut out / undervoltage protection sensors signal does not disappear during the waiting time for the circuit breaker fail protection, then the upper-level arc protection unit forms a signal to turn off its cell and a signal to the upper level, etc.

The device has a self-diagnosis system, which periodically monitors the correct operation (serviceability of inputs, communication channel, etc.). Failure of one input does not lead to inoperability of the unit. A malfunction of one unit does not lead to the inoperability of the device.

The status of the arc protection unit is displayed using the LEDs located on the front panel of the unit. LEDs are divided into several groups:

  • discrete and optical input LEDs;
  • output key LEDs;
  • «emergency/accident» LED;
  • «normal mode/fault mode» LED.

The “RESET” button returns the arc protection unit to its original status.

All information about the detected alarms is stored in non-volatile memory and can be viewed on the display of the control unit. In case of emergency or arc protection unit fault which is connected to the common CAN bus, the information will be displayed on the control unit. In case of a control unit accident, 3 keys are in an active state until reset. All information about the detected accidents is stored in the arc protection unit memory and can be viewed on the control unit. Information about the arc protection unit number and details of the accident or malfunction is shown in control unit menu. It is also possible to set the date and time, excess current cut-out / under-voltage protection sensors and circuit breaker fail protection time (10 ms/steps), change the block number in the network. Factory settings of timers: excess current cut-out / under-voltage protection sensors - 10 ms; circuit breaker fail protection - 50 ms.

Device Features:

  1. A large number of arc protection units, up to 99 pcs., fiber-optic sensors and output keys;
  2. Polymeric optical cable (for fiber-optic sensors) is much more reliable than quartz, used in such imported and domestic devices. The concept of "fragility" is missing. Fiber-optic sensor cables do not extend beyond the cell. Delivered 100% ready to use, with metal-plated tips;
  3. Reliability (long lifecycle) of the device due to the decentralised structure. In each cell the arc protection block is installed, which has its own 24V power supply, four optical inputs, four discrete inputs, four pulse output keys, and is able to work regardless of the state of the other elements of the device. Failure in the operation of the general unit of the control unit or communication cables does not lead to a loss of device operability and the passage of trip signals. In other optical arc protections, the failure of one of the common elements (control bus, control block, power supply, etc.) leads to the failure of the entire remote sensing;
  4. Arc protection device can be used simultaneously to protect up to 3 cabinets, depending on the amount of fiber-optic sensors in each of them;
  5. Intelligence of the device is determined by the connection diagram, which is more understandable for installation and for personnel to operate;
  6. The usage of a single block of arc protection unit allows you to significantly standardise electrical, wiring diagrams, design decisions;
  7. Ability to change parameters (excess current cut-out / circuit breaker fail protection) at the factory without contacting supplier;
  8. The possibility of installing an arc protection unit into a switchgear and testing at the factory;
  9. Cheaper cost of protection compared to other optical arc protections of the same quality class.
